ELSA-Brasil Study

The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health assessed the relationship of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and coronary artery calcium score in participants with no history of CVD or use of lipid-lowering therapies.

Design: Prospective, cohort

Patients: 3,845

Centers: Single

Countries: Brazil

Results: People with a CAC score > 0 had higher levels of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins than those with a CAC score of 0 (P < .001). A CAC score of > 0 also conferred higher levels of LDL and non-HDL and lower levels of HDL vs. a CAC score of 0 (P < .001 for all). After multivariable adjustment, log-transformed of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein levels were associated with presence and severity of CAC (P < .05 for both). Adding triglyceride-rich lipoprotein levels to conventional models improved prediction of CAC > 0 (P = .01).
