Question 22/36
What is the classic surgical treatment for recurrent tricuspid valve endocarditis in intravenous drug users?
Historically, excision of the tricuspid valve was used without inserting a valve prosthesis. The right atrium and right ventricle combine to form one right heart chamber. Most patients tolerate this fine without significant right heart failure, although a small percentage do go on to develop RV enlargement and pressure overload, which can be problematic.
