Question 35/36
What are the ECG findings of a secundum type atrial septal defect versus the primum type of atrial septal defect?
The ECG of a patient with an atrial septal defect (ASD) should show a right bundle branch block (sometimes incomplete) partially due to the right ventricular volume/pressure overload that occurs.
When an ostium primum atrial defect is present, the ECG reveals left axis deviation. When an ostium secundum atrial septal defect is present, the ECG reveals right axis deviation.
