Question 31/36
Historically, which medication is the safest to use during pregnancy to treat hypertension and what are the potential side effects?

Methyldopa has been used safely to treat hypertension during pregnancy. Methyldopa is a centrally acting alpha-2 receptor agonist. When these receptors are stimulated, norepinephrine release is inhibited thus the heart rate decreases and there is a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance leading to decreased afterload and decreased systemic blood pressure.
