Question 19/28
What is the Bernheim effect as it relates to aortic valve stenosis?
The Bernheim effect describes right heart failure developing prior to left heart failure in patients with aortic stenosis due to the hypertrophied ventricular septum bulging into the right ventricle impairing right ventricular diastolic function. Thus, symptoms of right-sided congestive heart failure may precede those of left-sided congestive heart failure.
