Question 28/28
What is the most common cause of pericarditis worldwide?

Tuberculosis is the most common cause of pericarditis and pericardial effusions worldwide. Tuberculosis can actually cause isolated infection of the pericardium without other organs becoming affected. Measuring the adenosine deaminase (ADA) level in the pericardial fluid, doing an acid-fast stain and appropriate culture as well as placing a PPD can help make this diagnosis.
